Saint Catherine’s Hospice is an adult’s hospice that cares for people with life limiting or life threatening conditions and their families from Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale and parts of East Yorkshire. While cancer is the most common illness among patients an important part of the hospice’s work is with patients who have serious neurological diseases including multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease. Saint Catherine’s also cares for people who have advanced heart, lung and liver disease. Patients come from all walks of life and sometimes from an early age.
When a diagnosis is given which offers no hope or where treatment is abandoned, families often feel very isolated and alone in their grief. Many of the patients’ conditions deteriorate slowly over a number of years, placing an enormous strain on family life. Often the patient will need constant care throughout the day and night and whilst families and friends willingly invest their total love, energy and attention into caring for their sick relative or friend, they simply do not have the skills or experience to continue.
It is then that the hospice responds with specialist, consultant led palliative care. Patients are offered symptom control, pain relief, end of life care and bereavement support. All care given to patients is holistic, appropriate to their individual needs and according to their personal wishes.
